The Perfect Engagement Ring

One of the many alluring traits of diamonds is the fact that no two are ever the same. Similarly, every couple is unique in their own way. So when it comes to buying an engagement ring, it’s essential to choose a ring that appeals to your unique sense of individuality.

As a precious symbol of your future together, choosing the right engagement ring is one of the most significant decisions you’ll ever make. Our goal at Pawan Jewellers is to simplify the process of buying the perfect engagement ring. This guide will show you how to choose a unique engagement ring you can treasure forever.

Diamond size and diamond carat guide

When buying a diamond engagement ring, the size of the centre diamond is often the first thing that comes to mind. Engagement rings are the true symbol of your life-long commitment to one another; it’s vital that you are happy with your purchase, and have an understanding of how sizing works. It will offer valuable insights as you make your decision.

The thing about carat weight

Diamond carat weight essentially measures diamond’s apparent size. How much a diamond weighs is measured by metric “carat” units, with 1 unit equivalent to 200 milligrams. A carat can be further subdivided into 100 points, which allows very precise weight measurements up to the hundredth decimal place.

Some carat weights (including three-quarter carat, half carat, and carat) are referred to as ‘magic sizes.’ All things being equal, the price of a diamond increases with its carat weight because larger stones are much rarer and generally more desirable. This said, two diamonds of the same carat weight can have differing values and pricing based on other critical factors like cut, colour, and clarity. While visually, there can be very little difference between a full carat diamond and one that weighs 0.99, the price difference can be significant because of the said factors.

The proverbial ‘Four Cs’

The proverbial ‘Four Cs’

If you’ve spent any amount of time on diamond or engagement ring research, you have probably heard about the Four Cs of diamonds. This grading system takes into account the above mentioned factors: cut, colour, clarity, and carat. To help you better understand what the Four Cs is all about, here is a rundown of what each one means:

  • Cut – Cut has more to do with a diamond’s sparkle factor than its shape. Cuts can therefore be graded from excellent to poor. When a piece of diamond is cut into shape—be it oval, pear, round, or square—it must be done within certain parameters so each facet can interact with light to ensure maximum shine.
  • Carat – Diamond size and weight are measured in carats, with one carat being 200 milligrams or 1/5 of a gram. Ring weights and sizes can vary widely.
  • Clarity – It can be difficult to find a perfectly flawless diamond free from any inclusions because it’s natural for tiny white or black flecks/lines to occur. Minute imperfections such as these determine a diamond’s clarity. The clarity of a diamond is rated on a scale from ‘flawless’ to ‘included.’ The fewer, smaller, and less visible these inclusions are, the higher the price of the diamond.
  • Colour – Diamonds come in a wide spectrum of colours and shades. It is rare to find ones that are completely colourless. Diamond colour is rated on a scale from D to no colour down to Z (which refer to stones that are visibly yellowish). Colourless diamonds are most expensive because of their purity. More recently, diamonds in fancy colours like chocolate, pink, and yellow, have become popular. For these fancy diamonds, the more saturated the colour is, the more valuable the piece.

Finding their style

When buying an engagement ring, it pays to know the style that your significant other prefers. Choose a piece that matches the types of jewellery she wears.

The ring should also suit her hands. Does she have long and slender fingers? Choose a ring with wide horizontal styling. For shorter fingers, vertical designs are best.

Don’t forget to take into consideration her daily activities. You will likely come across ring setting terms like solitaire, halo, and the like, each with their own unique characteristics that make them more fitting for certain lifestyles and fashion preferences.

One advantage you have when buying from online jewellers like Pawan is that you get access to an extensive selection of jewellery styles to match your loved one’s taste and lifestyle. Here, you will find almost every style and design imaginable.

Choice of metal

Last but not least, you also want to consider the kind of precious metal to use for your ring band and setting. Metals differ in terms of colour, hardness, and type. Gold is the traditional choice, but you can certainly choose others. White gold and platinum are popular for their elegantly understated appearance.

Ring Size

Perhaps the most precise way to determine your partner’s ring size is to have their finger measured by a jeweller. However, this isn’t always possible. As most proposals are often done by surprise, you have to be creative with your approach to finding your significant other’s finger size.

So how do you do it? Here’s a trick you can try: Borrow one of their favourite rings and use that as a basis for sizing. To make things even easier for you, we at Pawan Jewellers have prepared sizing guides that you can consult when shopping for engagement jewellery.
